Wrong-way driving (WWD), or contraflow driving, occurs when a motor vehicle is driving against the direction of traffic. WWD accidents kill over 650 people each year in the United States, with Texas being the hardest hit state. These
accidents are primarily caused by impaired or fatigued drivers.
Although WWD accidents make up only a small percentage of all accidents in the United States, they are far more likely to result in life-threatening injuries or deaths. This is because wrong-way driving typically occurs on divided
highways and access ramps, where vehicles are travelling at faster speeds. Furthermore, WWD crashes are usually caused by head-on collisions, which result in greater impact forces and a higher risk of developing severe injuries and
fatalities.
The goal of this website is to spread awareness and encourage government agencies and automobile manufacturers to take initiatives in developing in-vehicle WWD detection systems.
